Software as a Service (SaaS) companies dominate the tech industry, but did you know editors play an important role in a software product’s success? In our first program of the 2022–23 season, Kirran Iveson, senior technical editor at Shopify, discusses the editor’s role and responsibilities at a SaaS company like Shopify. He’ll discuss his approach to editing and working with writers in this environment. We’ll also learn about Kirran’s eclectic journey to senior technical editor and get advice on how you can begin and develop your own technical editing career.

About the speaker:

Kirran Iveson is a senior technical editor in Brockville, Ontario, where he lives with his wife, stepdaughter, and four cats. He oversees Shopify’s help centre, working with a team of technical writers to ensure the entirety of the product is documented, and that the help centre is free of errant keystrokes from passing pets. His working philosophy is that it’s him and the writer versus the text, rather than him and the style guide versus the writer and their work. When the editing is done, he’s either creating his own word puzzles called Piñones, reading, or watching British comedy panel shows.
