Meet the Executive

Editors Toronto’s executive is elected each May or June at the branch AGM, and any Editors Toronto member may apply for a position. Here is the group that is representing you for 2023–24.

Co-chair: Ann Nam-Tran Le

Ann is a freelance editor, writer, and graphic designer and completed her publishing certificate from Toronto Metropolitan University. Comics and manga are great loves of hers, and a large part of her book collection is dedicated to the art of the graphic narrative. She provides editorial services for books and comics at annshapes.com.

Main duties: ensures the branch is running smoothly by improving and establishing processes, supporting other chairs, and presiding at executive and business meetings; acts as the main contact with the national executive council.


malgosia-halliop

Co-chair:  Małgosia Halliop

Małgosia is a writer and editor with a focus on education, the environment, and any point where the two intersect. She has worked in academic publishing, university communications, and as a nature educator. She also spent some years home-schooling and nature-schooling her two kids. She holds an MA in English, an MEd in Adult Education and Community Development, and a certificate in publishing. On weekends you can find her exploring Toronto’s ravines and green spaces on foot or by bike, sometimes with a sketchbook in hand. 

Main duties: ensures the branch is running smoothly by improving and establishing processes, supporting other chairs, and presiding at executive and business meetings; acts as the main contact with the national executive council.


ronnie-morris

Vice-chair: Ronald Morris

Ronnie is based in Toronto and is primarily an academic editor and proofreader. He earned an MA in history and was enrolled in a PhD program when a medical emergency forced him to change direction. He has since completed the publishing program at Ryerson (now Toronto Metropolitan) University and has been working with a variety of monographs, journals, and grant applications. Ronnie is also a musician, playing and recording with local bands and touring internationally, and he was recently awarded a black belt in karate.

Main duties: assists and, when necessary, acts in place of the co-chairs; manages and recruits local volunteers; and maintains the Slack platform for the executive committee.


Ginny LeutyTreasurer: Ginny Leuty

Ginny is a freelance copy editor who works for FriesenPress as well as for her own clients. She began by editing for non-profit organizations and now specializes in non-fiction books. She has a degree in English literature and received her editing certificate from George Brown College. Prior to editing, Ginny worked in the arts, first at the National Ballet of Canada and then as the director of Art Gems, a high-level art auction that raises funds for an arts-based mental health rehabilitation program. Ginny is also teaching herself to paint with watercolours.

Main duties: sets the yearly budget with input from other chairs; keeps track of the budget and (along with the co-chairs) approves additional expenses/spending; acts as a point of contact for our accountant; pays speakers and seminar hosts/developers; and reimburses other chairs for Editors Toronto–related expenses.


sharon-cozensSecretary: Sharon Cozens

Sharon has recently started a new career as a freelance copy editor. She has an Honours BA (English/Humanities) from York University and an editing certificate from George Brown College. She loves the beauty of the English language and believes in the power of words to unite people. She’s an anglophile who loves reading, crocheting, beading, Star Trek, cryptic crosswords, and the smell of old books.

Main duties: records and updates the minutes during monthly executive meetings, prepares the template for executive committee members to input their reports, and proofreads chair reports to ensure that they adhere to the Editors Toronto style guide.


Gulsum SalimovaCommunications chair: Gulsum Salimova

Gulsum has a BA in History and French Language and Literature, and she is finishing the Editorial Certificate program at George Brown College this year. She splits her work between teaching and tutoring French, and editing and writing in English. Gulsum works in an elementary school as a language monitor to promote French language and culture. She is also a proofreader for the European Architectural Histories journal and a contributor at Faze Magazine. In her downtime, she enjoys napping with her adorable cats and travelling when she gets the chance.

Main duties: manages the Editors Toronto webpage and social media accounts (Facebook, Mailchimp, X), writes and edits monthly newsletters, plans social media campaigns, and responds to or forwards to the appropriate executive all emails sent to the Editors Toronto email.


keith-goddardEditor-in-chief, BoldFace: Keith Goddard

Keith is a freelance editor of non-fiction, specializing in music and educational materials. A former teacher (BEd) and professional musician (MA), he completed the editing certificate program at Simon Fraser University. He currently works for a grant writing company and was the sole editor on a successful $30 million grant application for the education of children living in distressed communities.  

Main duties: generates blog post ideas and plans content, reviews submissions for structure and style, coordinates the exec review and copy editing process, publishes blog posts, and maintains the BoldFace website.

Programs chair: Anita Clarke

Anita is an engineering storyteller and the founder of the fashion blog I want – I got. She was one of the first and most prominent online fashion writers in Toronto and Canada. Anita’s 14-year career as an award-winning software quality assurance professional and a decade-long blogging career led her to Shopify. As the senior managing editor of Shopify’s Engineering Blog, she brings her technical editor expertise to help developers craft and share their stories about Shopify’s engineering discipline. She has spoken about her technology journey with DevTO, ITAC Inspiring Tech Careers Conference, and TD Then and Now.

Main duties: develops and plans monthly programs; brainstorms topics and reaches out to potential speakers; secures accommodations/Zoom meeting slots; hosts the event; and writes program promos for email blasts, social media, and the blog.


Stephanie Edwards

Community liaison: Stephanie Edwards

Stephanie is the owner of the blog Fitness and Fluff Stuff and specializes in content creation and event management. She loves to learn and explore and is passionate about undertaking creative assignments. Stephanie enjoys reading, writing, and hanging out with her loved ones. When she is not working or working out, she is somewhere singing.

Main duties: acts as the point person for member and prospective member questions; welcomes new members and guests at social events and programs; facilitates the Q&A at programs; plans virtual and in-person networking and social events for members and the wider publishing/communications/freelancer community; and liaises with other associated groups and organizations.


Seminars chair: Vacant

Main duties: coordinates the seminars program, including current seminars as well as future seminar development; writes promotional materials for social media, email, and BoldFace; communicates with instructors and clients; ensures that seminar fees are collected from clients.
