The recently launched Editors Canada Discord server is bursting with conversations and information. The most interesting channel is the #water-cooler, of course. We came across a useful and really important thread for anyone working with language: snacks!

It is a universal truth that people who spend an unhealthy amount of time in front of their computers need serious snacks. It’s a versatile tool to keep editors well fed, alleviate boredom (sometimes), and prevent us from falling asleep (when chasing deadlines through the night).
A member wanted to know what the best snacks for editing are — and the snack talk took off. We condensed it into a handy list.
Healthy snacks
- Half a cucumber cut into slices with a bit of salt and pepper
- Mini cucumbers with cream cheese or a dip (Metro’s parmesan cheese dip was mentioned)
- Mini grape tomatoes (although they are expensive)
- Sliced banana, strawberries, or blueberries with some sugar (it’s healthy-ish!)
- Frozen blueberries (with or without sugar)
- Frozen fruit (in summer)
Yummy snacks, but maybe not all that healthy
- Gummy bears, fruit gummies . . . anything gummy, really (one of our reviewers mentioned the sour keys at Bulk Barn)
- Popcorn
- A tasty spread on a tortilla that is folded in half
- A tortilla spread with peanut butter or Nutella and rolled around a banana (!!)
- Pretzels
Some good ideas
- Keep a snackle box with “charcuterie items” of different textures, flavours, and consistencies (this might be the ultimate winner of snack ideas).
- Chewing gum is a favourite — apparently, it can also serve the same purpose as a fidget device.
- You can make your own fruit gummies.
Down the rabbit hole
The homemade fruit gummies idea triggered an internet search for recipes. We found a few extra snack ideas, with recipe links in case you have time and energy to make your own:
- Fruit gummies and fruit roll-ups
- Chocolate bark in unlimited variations: caramel apple graham cracker, salted fruit and nuts, and a few other ideas
- Dips and spreads of all kinds: red pepper tapenade, guacamole, peanut butter hummus (if you’d like to try something different), olive tapenade
- Anything on a skewer (to keep things interesting): fruit (and cheese), Caprese salad, antipasto — with anything you like: salami, prosciutto, bocconcini, olives, preserved artichokes, bell peppers
- Trail mix, nuts, dried fruit, apple chips (apple season is coming up)
- Crackers — bought or homemade (these thyme-sea salt crackers look delectable)
That’s the roundup! It’s always a delight to add a snack to your day to help keep you focused.
