Small Press Publishing: A Glimpse Into the Industry

Join Editors Toronto on Tuesday, October 26, at 7:00 pm EST via Zoom for “Small Press Publishing: A Glimpse Into the Industry.”

In this month’s program, join us and our panel to learn about small press publishing from two presses, a long-established Canadian press and a recently established genre press based in the United States. Pia Singhal, acquiring editor for ECW Press, and Bryce O’Connor, author and owner of Wraithmarked Creative, will tell us about their respective companies and join us for a moderated Q&A. The program is designed to draw attention to their similarities and differences from both an editor’s and an incoming writer’s perspective.

About the speakers:

Bryce O’Connor learned the importance of a well-crafted story at an early age. Raised on the tall tales of Brian Jacques’s Redwall and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, he fell in love with reading when he realized that one’s imagination is the only place where dragons might actually fly free. Publishing first The Wings of War shortly out of college, he followed that series up with The Shattered Reigns and Warformed: Stormweaver, both of which have been international bestsellers. In 2020 he established Wraithmarked Creative with the goal of assisting independent authors with getting a leg up in the publishing industry (and obviously making lots of money off their hard work, sweat and tears), and has steadily been expanding the company into various speculative fiction fields since. He credits his success to parents who refused to medicate him as a child (to everyone else’s great chagrin) and his five-year-old pit bull, Arro. Wraithmarked’s brand basically is “quality, cool, professional, but never leaving behind the humor.”

Pia Singhal is an acquiring editor with ECW Press, where she’s working on building a full list. So far, she has acquired a novel about the ethics and privilege surrounding humanitarian work, a memoir by a former CTV reporter about the traumatic effects of crime reporting on victims, and a book about the small ways we can redefine masculinity to become healthier for everyone who interacts with it. Prior to joining ECW, she worked at Westwood Creative Artists Ltd. with Jackie Kaiser, and at the beloved Type Books, where she occasionally still hangs out. She strongly recommends the following reads: The Seas by Samantha Hunt, Bottle Rocket Hearts by Zoe Whittall, In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, and the comments section of Refinery29‘s Money Diaries series.
