Executive Unplugged: Małgosia Halliop, Communications Chair

We wanted to give Editors Toronto members and student affiliates another way to get to know their executive committee members, while also finding out what is involved in being on the committee. So, we asked executive committee members to introduce themselves and their roles by answering a few questions for our “Executive Unplugged” series.

Meet Małgosia, our current communications chair. She has been a member of Editors Canada for two years and joined the Editors Toronto executive committee as of the 2022–23 season. She completed her publishing certificate at Toronto Metropolitan University years ago and has recently returned to the world of writing and editing after forays into several other spheres, including parenting.

Małgosia stands in front of yellow fall foliage with a notebook in her hand.

What kind of editor are you? Tell us a bit about your experience.

I’m primarily a non-fiction editor. I’ve worked in a variety of genres and contexts, but my interests and experience keep circling back to two niches: education and environmental/climate communication. I’ve worked in academic publishing, university communications, and nature education for kids and adults. I also home-schooled my kids for a number of years. I have a master’s degree in adult education, but I have recently been writing and editing curriculum-based material for elementary-grade students and teachers. I’m a voracious learner myself, so it’s no wonder I keep coming back to education!

What is your favourite part of the role you hold on the executive committee (or the “exec,” as we call it)?

One of my favourite parts of this role has been designing visuals in Canva to promote our monthly programs. I’ve dabbled in visual art in other past contexts, and as I’m working mostly with words right now, doing small design projects feeds a different part of my soul! And since I currently work fairly independently, I’ve also enjoyed the friendly back-and-forth collaboration of working on a small and responsive team.

Give us an elevator pitch for your role.

The communications chair role is a great fit for anyone looking for experience in crafting and scheduling social media posts, writing and sending out a regular newsletter, and managing ongoing event promotion. It’s also a fun way to practice your design skills and to contribute to timely reviewing and editing of promotional materials, blog posts, and other branch documents.

What’s your favourite part of an exec meeting?

I enjoy seeing the friendly faces on the screen and being part of a collaborative decision-making process. There’s always some humour and laughter as well!

If you didn’t have your role on the exec, what role would you pick?

I’ve been curious about the seminars chair role. As I mentioned, I have a degree in adult education and find the learning process fascinating on every level. Designing a course could be a good fit for me!
