At the November 2015 meeting of Editors Canada’s Toronto branch, Sue Carter, Pirom Houth, and Kate Icely spoke with editors about the benefits of internships and what makes them successful.
Sue Carter is the editor of Quill & Quire, where she oversees all aspects of the magazine’s print publication and online platforms. She also serves as the arts and ideas editor for This Magazine and the national books columnist for Metro News. In her position at Quill & Quire, Sue is responsible for the hiring, management, and evaluation of interns.
Pirom Houth is the career and placement coordinator at the University of Guelph-Humber. His portfolio includes overseeing the internship and placement process for more than 500 students annually in the Media Studies and Justice Studies degree programs. Pirom has worked professionally in higher education for more than five years and has experience supporting students through student advising and integrative programming.
Kate Icely is the editorial assistant to the executive publisher/executive vice-president at Penguin Random House Canada. She has held two internships, one at independent publisher The Porcupine’s Quill and the other in the editorial department of Random House of Canada. Kate has a publishing certificate from Ryerson University and a bachelor of arts from Queen’s University.
